In 2023, the National Space Center (NCC) will be completed in the west of Moscow. The complex of buildings will appear on the territory of the State Space Research and Production Center (GKNPTs) named after M.V. Khrunichev. The construction site was visited by the Mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyaninand General Director of the State Corporation “Roscosmos” Dmitry Rogozin.
“Despite the pandemic, the development of the city does not stop. Here, on the territory of the Khrunichev Center, the largest project in Moscow is being implemented to create a scientific and technological cluster, which will combine production, research and educational buildings. About two million square meters is the capacity of this facility, including the reconstruction and creation of new buildings. The core of this territory will, of course, be the scientific and space center, which is being built jointly with Roskosmos,” Sergei Sobyanin noted.
He added that a significant part of the 10-storey buildings of the future NCC has already been built. The builders have begun the construction of the main, high-rise tower. Already seven floors are ready. The complex will be handed over to Roskosmos in 2023.
Reorganization of the territory of the Space Research and Production Center named after M.V. Khrunichev, located in the west of the city in the Filevsky Park area, is a joint project of the Moscow Government and the state corporation Roscosmos. The complex of buildings of the national space center with a total area of about 250,000 square meters will become the dominant feature.
“On this territory, we expect to gather the potential of our most diverse enterprises for technology transfer, so that they really work in decent jobs, so that people can fully devote themselves to work and so that you get not only a unique microdistrict – an engineering, design district in the center of Moscow, but also a colossal return for the country as a whole, for its prestige, for the exploration of far and near space, ”said the CEO of the state corporation Roscosmos.
The creation of the NCC will allow uniting on one site a number of key organizations of the rocket and space industry: the central office and situational center of the state corporation Roscosmos, industry institutes and enterprises that are now scattered throughout Moscow. In addition, it will include a modern educational complex, youth design bureaus, a business support center, exhibition centers, and a production diversification center.
“Here we plan to place 20 thousand engineers, designers and administrative staff of the Moscow enterprises of Roskosmos, including eight thousand employees directly from the Khrunichev center, who need modern high-tech jobs,” said Dmitry Rogozin.
Rocket tower and “keys”
The central architectural element will be a high-rise triangular tower resembling a rocket mounted on a launch pad.
A long building will adjoin the tower, divided into several blocks – “keys”. It will be possible to walk through the building through a through gallery, which, according to the idea of the authors, symbolizes a timeline telling about the history of space exploration.
During the development of the project, the architects used simple geometric shapes. The decorative design of the facades of the complex of buildings will be made in the same style using glass and thin aluminum plates.
Now the monolithic work on the creation of the low-rise part of the complex (“keys”) is being completed. The installation of the roof is also underway, the installation of internal engineering systems and partitions has begun. In the high-rise part of the complex (tower), specialists are carrying out monolithic work at the level of the eighth floor. In total, 800 people are involved in the facility.
Unique microdistrict and the most important production
According to Sergei Sobyanin, the territory of the center named after M.V. Khrunichev today – does not meet the tasks of Roskosmos and ideas about modern production. “On the instructions of the President of Russia, together with you, in fact, we are reviving this territory, bringing the work of Roscosmos to a new level,” said the Mayor of Moscow. He added that thanks to this, the central core of the state corporation will receive a new life and will be able to implement tasks at the modern level.
The area near the center will be landscaped. There will be open-air expositions and fountains.
The project provides not only for the construction of NCC buildings, but also for the preservation of the production complex of the M.V. Khrunichev, which will occupy about 50 hectares.
Dmitry Rogozin emphasized that it is here that the third stages for the heavy Angara-A5V rocket will be created. “Here, in the NCC, the basic departments of the leading Moscow engineering universities will be located, which train specialists for us, and we expect that the direct contact of young specialists, students of technical universities with engineers and designers of existing design bureaus, as well as their possible work on Pilot production will create a unique, completely synergistic effect for growing a new generation of the Russian rocket and space industry,” he said.
On the vacated area of about 90 hectares, a research and production cluster of the Technopolis Moscow special economic zone will appear, the residents of which will be high-tech enterprises, including contractors of the state corporation Roscosmos. Another part of the territory will be occupied by residential buildings, which will be built for the resettlement of local residents under the renovation program, and social facilities.
Dmitry Rogozin noted that the technopark will have all the advantages of a special economic zone: “In fact, there are already applications from those enterprises that are somehow technically and economically connected with the rocket and space industry. Of course, they will get an opportunity for a unique development here.”
The head of Roscosmos also thanked the Moscow Government for the development of Filevsky Park, including the solution of transport issues: “On the whole, such a huge, old, kind area comes to life, and I think that residents will be proud that they live here.”
Sergei Sobyanin added that it is planned to build two bridges across the Moscow River, which will allow residents to get to the nearest metro stations faster.
