On January 23, the Varyag Youth Army detachment visited the performance “The Zvezda Theater” of the Central Academic Theater of the Russian Army (TsATRA).

The event took place as part of military-patriotic work among the youth of the Moscow Region in order to maintain activity and encourage the Varyag Youth Army detachment of the city district of Podolsk based on the results of activities in 2021.

The performance “Theatre” Zvezda “is dedicated to the history of TsATRA. During the performance, the members of the Yunarmiya walked 1720 steps through the halls, corridors and nooks and crannies of the building, including closed government boxes. 25 young spectators went up to the very top, saw the windows of the workshops, secret stairs. Then we went down to the stylobate – the most mysterious place, an underground labyrinth. Each historical stage was inscribed in the architectural landscape of the famous theater building.

During the promenade through the building, the Varyag detachment fell into the past and became a witness and participant in the life of the Army Theater. The members of the Yunarmiya saw with their own eyes the appearance of the architectural design of the star building, censors prohibiting the innovative painting of the artist Deineka. As well as a rehearsal of a play based on Shakespeare by the legendary director Alexei Popov, the life of a brigade of actors of the Army Theater at the front, grandiose battle scenes, heroes of previous performances in historical costumes.

After the end of the event, the guests noted that they had not yet seen a production of this scale in any theater. Everyone was delighted with the play of the actors and the genre in which the performance was staged.

The team of the creators of the performance was looking for a genre that would correspond to the monumentality, majestic history and volume of TsATRA, that large historical layer that stands behind it, and decided to focus on cinema motion – the direction of immersive theater, a performance that immersed in the atmosphere of the era. The performance combines performance and installation, documentary theatre, game theater and verbatim. The Zvezda Theater project was the result of several months of work on the archives, meetings with the oldest employees and the troupe of the Army Theater, discussions and the search for a conceptual solution.
