Commander of the 2nd Guards Combined Arms Red Banner Army of the Central Military District (TsVO), Lieutenant General Andrei Kolotovkin, held a solemn meeting of the leadership at the army headquarters in Samara on the occasion of the celebration of the 79th anniversary of the formation of the association.

“This is the oldest guards army in the Russian Armed Forces. More than 103 thousand of its servicemen during the Great Patriotic War were awarded orders and medals, over 220 people became Heroes of the Soviet Union,” said Lieutenant General Andrei Kolotovkin.

The commander noted that the servicemen continue the glorious traditions of the older generation: they show good results during the performance of special tasks, receive good marks during exercises and army competitions.

At the end of the solemn meeting, Lieutenant-General Andrei Kolotovkin presented awards, thanks and valuable gifts to distinguished officers.

The 2nd Guards Red Banner Combined Arms Army was formed at the end of the Battle of Stalingrad as the first tank army of a new type. Taking into account the experience of military operations, it was created only from mobile formations and units: tank and mechanized corps, brigades and regiments. For more than 30 years after the withdrawal of troops from Germany, the army is deployed in the regions of the Volga region and the Southern Urals with headquarters in Samara.
