Military personnel of the Western Military District (ZVO) congratulated veterans Filipp Mikhailovich Zharkay (Faivish Mendeleevich) and Zinovy ​​Leonidovich Merkin on the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad from the military blockade.

“I express words of endless respect and gratitude to the soldiers, home front workers and residents who have endured the hardest trials of the military blockade of the city. I heartily congratulate the residents of the city on this important victory,” said Colonel-General Alexander Zhuravlev, Commander of the Western Military District.

Faivish Mendeleevich from February 1944 participated in breaking the blockade of Leningrad, liberating Pskov and Ostrov. Member of the storming of the Reichstag in Berlin. During the war he was seriously wounded three times. In 1972 he retired from the Armed Forces with the rank of colonel.

Zinoviy Leonidovich, after attributing to himself one year, signed up as a volunteer in the division of the people’s militia of the city of Leningrad. In July 1941, he was seriously wounded while surrounded. He fought on the Nevsky Piglet, crossed the Neva on a wooden raft.

The military orchestra of the Western Military District and the Military Engineering and Technical Institute performed compositions of the war years, and students from nearby schools read poems about the war for veterans and presented them with drawings.

The events were held near the homes of veterans and under the windows of the hospital for veterans of wars and military conflicts in St. Petersburg.

Military personnel of the Western Military District handed over memorable gifts and souvenirs to veterans.
