Today, on the eve of the 78th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the fascist blockade, a unique exhibition dedicated to the provision of medical care during the blockade of the city on the Neva was opened.
The Museum of Siege Medicine is the first exposition space in Russia dedicated to the feat of medical workers who saved the lives of the defenders of Leningrad in 1941-1944. The exhibition presents rare documents and unique artifacts that tell about little-known pages in the history of the city’s medical institutions during the Great Patriotic War, about the heroic work of doctors and nurses on the Leningrad and Volkhov fronts.
One of the central places of the exposition is given to the restored GAZ-AA ambulance, a genuine item from the collection of the Military Medical Museum. During the Great Patriotic War, the legendary “lorries” transported more than 20,000 wounded and sick from besieged Leningrad along the Road of Life.
The Museum of Siege Medicine also presents for the first time unique documents from the funds of the Central State Archive of St. Petersburg, which present the activities of the Sofia Perovskaya Hospital in 1943, reveal the features of the work of medical units, the difficulties of supply and everyday life.
The exposition is located on the territory of the Military Medical Museum – the Museum of Russian Medicine and the Military Medical Service, which is called the “Medical Hermitage”. The museum was established on November 12, 1942, when medicine was of strategic importance.
“The Museum of Besieged Medicine is a symbol of the feat of the doctors of besieged Leningrad. The creation of the museum is one of the areas of activity to preserve the memory of the defenders of our city, medical workers who followed the traditions of mercy and philanthropy, selflessness and perseverance,” Anatoly Budko, director of the Military Medical Museum, said during the opening ceremony of the exposition.
