For 10 years, construction, restoration or major repairs in 34 theaters have been completed in the capital.
Moscow plans to renovate six theaters in 2022-2023. The work will be carried out within the framework of the regional program “Development of the cultural and tourist environment and preservation of cultural heritage.” The buildings of the Moscow Drama Theater on Malaya Bronnaya, the Firebird Puppet Theater, the Center for Theater and Cinema on Povarskaya, the Moscow State Variety Theater, the Praktika Theater will be put in order, and the building of the Choir of Soloists will be renovated as part of the city’s Targeted Investment Program Moscow.
“Over the past 10 years, 34 theaters have been built, restored and overhauled in the capital. We are talking about 80 buildings. Enormous work has been done, thanks to which cultural venues have new opportunities for development. They were re-equipped, they became more modern and more comfortable. This year and next, it is planned to complete the repair and restoration of six more theaters,” she said.

The public has already appreciated the results of the renovation of the Vedogon Theater building in ZelAO – a major overhaul was recently completed here. The modern theatrical and cultural center now has three rental platforms – a large and small halls, as well as a special children’s hall for interactive programs. Halls, buffets, dressing rooms and dressing rooms were placed here, comfortable chairs for spectators were installed, the stages were equipped with the latest lighting and sound equipment. The stage of the big hall can be transformed taking into account the artistic needs of the performance.
In addition, several theaters located in historical buildings were restored in the capital, where it is very important to preserve the appearance and unique details of the building. So, the building of the theater “School of the Modern Play” on Neglinka Street was practically rebuilt: it was badly damaged in a fire, but specialists were able to recreate the style and details of the building built in 1816. And at the Sovremennik Theater on Chistoprudny Boulevard, communications were replaced and equipped with the latest equipment.
Now the reconstruction of the Moscow Drama Theater on Malaya Bronnaya is underway, it is planned to be completed before the end of the year. To make a new framework for the stage, auditorium and premises, the builders used more than 200 tons of metal structures, of which 66 tons fall on the stage. According to the project, the historical balcony for spectators will be completely reassembled here. Today, specialists in the workshops are restoring historical stucco molding, and the walls of the building are being cleaned of plaster.
Restoration of the building of the Moscow State Variety Theater in the famous House on the Embankment continues. It has not been repaired for about 60 years. Specialists will restore the bearing capacity of the structures, renew facades, door and window openings, and recreate the historical layout and interiors. The theater will completely change the systems of ventilation, heat supply, water supply, fire safety, electrical communications. In addition, the stage equipment, decoration of the stage and theater premises will be replaced, and new chairs will be installed in the hall and the decoration will be refreshed. The renovated Variety Theater will become part of the modernized urban environment of Balchug Island.
