Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, who is in Beijing as part of the delegation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, greeted the Russian athletes participating in the XXIV Winter Olympic Games.
The grand opening of the main sports competitions will take place today at the National Stadium of the Chinese capital “Bird’s Nest”.
“The Olympic Games are a triumph of sportsmanship and fortitude. They promote the values of fair competition and the unity of people around the world. About 4,000 athletes from over 90 countries will gather in Beijing. We are grateful to our colleagues from China and the IOC for the quality organization of the competition. This is especially important during a pandemic. Serious work has been done to ensure comfortable and safe conditions for all participants,” Dmitry Chernyshenko said.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the Russian team included both experienced athletes and Games debutants who managed to prove themselves on the world sports arena. It consists of 213 athletes representing 34 regions of Russia, including 62 Honored Masters of Sports, 72 International Masters of Sports and 55 Masters of Sports.
“The first Russian athletes have already started in freestyle competitions. Anastasia Smirnova made it to the final of the competition. Our figure skaters and the women’s ice hockey team also started fighting in the team tournament. These sports are represented by strong athletes – world figure skating champion Anna Shcherbakova and European champion Kamila Valieva. Tomorrow the first medals in biathlon, speed skating, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, freestyle and short track will be played. We wish all our athletes, without exception, fortitude and fair refereeing. The country is rooting for you!” Dmitry Chernyshenko said.
The standard-bearers of the Russian team at the opening ceremony will be Olympic silver medalist in speed skating in Sochi, world champion Olga Fatkulina and Olympic champion, world champion in ice hockey and two-time winner of the Gagarin Cup Vadim Shipachev.
“Olga Fatkulina and Vadim Shipachyov are an example of purposefulness and sports character. I think that they are a worthy choice of flag-bearers for our team,” Dmitry Chernyshenko said.
At the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing from February 4 to 20, 109 sets of medals in 15 disciplines will be played. The Chinese capital will be the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Games.
