In total, experts counted 7337 mallards: 4189 drakes and 3148 ducks.

The all-Russian action “Grey neck – 2022” was held in the capital. Mospriroda specialists took into account 7337 mallards and three species of waterfowl from the Red Book. They were found in the reservoirs of 11 natural sites in Moscow and nearby areas. Volunteers and schoolchildren helped count the ducks.

“The purpose of the event is to find out what species of birds winter in the capital, to collect data on changes in their numbers and habitats. After all, the urban avifauna is one of the indicators of the ecological situation and the state of water bodies. This winter, more than seven thousand waterfowl remained in natural areas. Most of them are mallards, birds from the Red Data Book were also found – the common teal, black tufted duck, ”specified Vera Strukova, deputy head

State environmental budgetary institution “Mospriroda”.

In total, 7337 mallards were counted within the campaign, of which 4189 males (drakes) and 3148 females (ducks). Such an imbalance in the number of individuals is not critical. Pairs are formed in spring, when those mallards return to the city, which migrated south in autumn.

Most mallards were found in the natural areas of the North-Eastern Administrative District: 2644 ducks were counted there. Many waterfowl live in the reservoirs of the Kuzminki-Lublino (1533 mallards) and Bitsevsky Forest (1152 mallards) natural and historical parks and in the territories adjacent to them.

Of the finds in the course of accounting in the North-Eastern Administrative Okrug – tangerines (the third category of rarity of the Red Book of Russia and a new species for Moscow), in the natural and historical park “Izmailovo” – teal-whistle (the first category of the Red Book of Moscow) and crested duck (the third category of the Red Book Moscow).

Traditionally share Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection of Moscow are carried out on certain weekends so that the accuracy of the results is not affected by possible internal migration. Since many water bodies freeze completely in winter, birds fly to others where there are unfrozen polynyas. Therefore, such flights can ruin the statistics if you count birds on different days.

Accounting data will be sent to sum up the overall results of the all-Russian action “Gray neck – 2022”.
