V. Tropinin. Self-portrait against a window overlooking the Kremlin. 1846

Guests of the lecture-excursion “Moscow Titian” will be introduced to the biography and work of Vasily Tropinin.

The great painter was a serf for most of his life and received his freedom at the age of 47, when he became a famous artist. Vasily Tropinin worked during the reign of five Russian tsars. The nobles ordered portraits from him, collectors and antiquarians dreamed of getting the artist’s paintings in their collections.

He was considered one of the best portrait painters of his time. It was said that if Tropinin had created only a portrait of Pushkin and The Lacemaker, he would have entered the history of the artistic culture of the 19th century. Karl Bryullov himself refused to paint portraits of Muscovites under the pretext that there was already an excellent master in the city.
