February 12 marks the 122nd anniversary of the birth of Vasily Chuikov, the founder of the Civil Defense. Today, employees of the EMERCOM of Russia system and civil defense veterans recall the marshal’s invaluable contribution to the formation and development of civil defense.

Vasily Chuikov founded and headed the civil defense of the USSR in 1961. Under his leadership, an effective nationwide civil defense system was organized to protect the population and territories.

In 2012, in honor of the 80th anniversary of the Civil Defense, a commemorative medal “Marshal Vasily Chuikov” was established in the emergency department. The medal is awarded to employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia and people related to the Civil Defense for many years of and impeccable service to the civil defense cause.

On this day, a flower-laying ceremony was held at the grave of the military leader on the Square of Sorrow Mamaev Kurgan. The event was attended by employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, the territorial subsystem of the RSChS, students of cadet classes and residents of the Hero City of Volgograd.

During the war, Vasily Ivanovich Chuikov commanded the 62nd Army (8th Guards Army), which especially distinguished itself in the Battle of Stalingrad. In the post-war period, he held high positions in the USSR Ministry of Defense. From 1961 to 1972, Vasily Chuikov led the country’s civil defense forces.
