Census of the Red Book: what rare animals are found in the natural areas of the capital

Considered gone

Last year, specialists met four species of animals in the natural areas of Moscow that were considered probably extinct. So, in the natural and historical park “Bitsevsky Forest” they noticed a reed warbler, in the natural and historical park “Moskvoretsky” – a marsh owl, and in the landscape reserve “Valley of the River Skhodnya in Kurkino” they found two types of checkered butterflies: atalia and diamine. All of them have been assigned a zero rarity category.

Also, some animals of the first category of rarity were recorded in different natural areas. Among them are stoat, quail, red forest ants, black polecat, lapwing, buzzard, owl, lizard viviparous, carrier, meadow pipit and field lark.

Often found

Most often, six species of animals can be seen in the capital. In 2021, squirrels were found in 16 natural areas, foxes and hares were found in 11, and hedgehogs were seen in another nine. Beavers live in six parks and reserves.
