How the city helps cancer patients

At the end of 2019, a new standard of oncological care began to be introduced in Moscow. Patients are now treated in specialized cancer centersorganized on the basis of six large hospitals. In each, you can undergo diagnostics, surgical treatment, radiation and drug therapy, as well as dispensary observation.

“The standard for providing oncological care, which was switched to in Moscow, is not just the organization of specialized centers based on the largest city hospitals and a well-organized routing. This is a deep rethinking of the entire process of providing medical care. The center is the patient, whose path is clearly regulated and understandable – from the moment of suspicion of a disease to treatment and follow-up. Thanks to the management of the patient within the framework of one medical organization, he is diagnosed and treated faster, and in the treatment of oncological diseases, time is the most important factor. Continuity appears when the patient goes all the way with the same specialists who know all the nuances of his medical history and treatment. This further reduces the psychological burden and forms a positive attitude. All these and many other aspects may not be noticeable, but they are very important, and we try to carefully work out every, even the smallest detail, so that everything works in favor of the patient and is aimed at his speedy recovery,” said the chief physician of the City Clinical Oncology Hospital No. 1 Vsevolod Galkin.

Moscow also became the first region in Russia to switch to new federal clinical guidelines for the treatment of the most common types of cancer three years ahead of schedule. The city has introduced expanded standards of drug therapy for 10 cancer sites, which account for about 90 percent of oncological diseases. Citizens receive modern targeted and immune drugs.

Besides, project is being implemented “Personal Assistant”. Within its framework, the specialists of the My Documents offices help patients with cancer make an appointment with doctors, for examinations, remind them of an upcoming visit, enter information into the city cancer registry, and solve problems that arise.
