Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko spoke about the concept of the master plan for the tourist areas of the Sakhalin Region. The document, developed by the Tourism.RF corporation, was approved by the head of the Sakhalin Region, Valery Limarenko.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the implementation of projects to create a modern and safe tourist infrastructure on Sakhalin will ensure a four-fold increase in tourist flow by 2030.

“Russian President Vladimir Putin has called the rapid development of the Far East a key priority. The government is actively working to ensure socio-economic growth in the Far Eastern regions. The Sakhalin Region is the only subject of the country located on the islands. This feature, as well as remoteness from the central part of Russia, limits its accessibility for tourists. It is necessary to develop tourist Sakhalin in a complex way – to build hotels for all-season recreation, use eco-technologies, and ensure transport connectivity of the territory. Thanks to the tools of the national project “Tourism and Hospitality Industry”, we will be able to solve these problems. The all-season ski resort “Mountain Air” and the territory of natural ecological tourism “Laguna Busse” should become key for development. Comfortable and affordable three-star hotels will form the basis of the new room stock. The implementation of projects to create a modern and safe tourist infrastructure on Sakhalin will ensure a four-fold increase in tourist flow by 2030. According to the Corporation “Tourism.RF”, the island will be able to visit annually more than 1 million people – Russians and foreign tourists”, – said Dmitry Chernyshenko.

The popularity of Sakhalin among tourists is growing. Now most often the region is visited by guests from Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as large cities of the Far East. These are lovers of outdoor activities (skiing, cycling) and travelers who are attracted by the natural uniqueness of the region. There are also guests from Japan, South Korea, the USA and China. On average, tourists spend four days on the island and spend 5–5.5 thousand rubles per person per day. Most trips are self-organized and prefer to stay in hotels for up to four nights.

“The draft master plan is the next stage of our joint work with the Sakhalin Region, a cooperation agreement with which was concluded in the fall of 2021. Comprehensive planning for the development of Sakhalin as a new tourist center in the Far East involves joint work on the development of the transport component and hospitality infrastructure with the Ministry for the Development of the Far East, the Ministry of Construction, and the regional administration. All these measures will increase the attractiveness of the region both for travelers from Russia and for guests from abroad,” said Sergey Sukhanov, General Director of the Tourism.RF Corporation.

“The beauty of Sakhalin and the Kuriles is difficult to describe in words. Island nature is incredible, and there are many who want to see it. We are developing the rich tourism potential of the region in order to make the life of Sakhalin and Kuril residents more comfortable and, of course, to attract guests from other regions and countries. “Mountain Air” is able to become the best ski resort beyond the Urals. This task was also set by the presidential envoy to the Far East, Yuri Trutnev. We are seeking federal support for tourism infrastructure development projects. Among them is the construction of new tracks, lifts and a snowmaking system at the Gorny Vozdukh resort, as well as a section of the road to Lake Busse. Business expresses interest in the construction of modern hotels on Iturup,” said Valeriy Limarenko.

The comprehensive development of tourist areas, including the expansion of the fund of modern high-quality accommodation facilities and the increase in the capacity of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport from 2023 to 5.7 million passengers a year, will help increase the flow of guests to Sakhalin. The cruise infrastructure in the city of Korsakov, as well as the active promotion of the brand of the Sakhalin Region at the Russian and international level, will also contribute to the increase in the tourist flow.
