Volunteers-ecologists not only take care of the environment, put things in order in Moscow squares and parks, collect recyclable materials for recycling, but also teach citizens how to sort garbage, tell them how to form healthy eco-habits and lead an eco-friendly lifestyle.

In 2021, over five thousand Moscow volunteers became participants in city environmental events. They helped on subbotniks, planted trees and actively engaged in environmental education. For those who care about the environment and want to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle, the Mosvolonter resource center implements the Moscow Environmental Volunteers program.

Environmental volunteering is one of the areas of volunteering that has been actively developing since 2020. Eco-volunteers undergo training that is suitable for both beginners in the topic of ecology and experienced volunteers, and then apply the knowledge gained in practice during thematic actions, forums and workshops.

“Caring for nature, the world around us and the city are the tasks set by volunteer environmentalists in Moscow. The ecological direction receives a great response among the townspeople. In 2021, more than five thousand people took part in environmental events. Volunteers choose conscious consumption, sort recyclables and popularize the ideas of environmental friendliness,” she said.

Ekaterina Dragunova, Chairman of the Committee for Public Relations and Youth Policy of the city of Moscow.

One of the events was the “Kind Wild World” campaign, a zoo quest organized by volunteers together with the Moscow Zoo. Muscovites could walk through the stations, learn about animals and win prizes. As part of the World Cleanup Day campaign, volunteers cleaned up the park in Kuntsevo and organized an educational game #EkoGTO for the participants of the cleanup. As part of the Eco-Life in the Metropolis 2.0 training project, volunteers conducted a series of online eco-lessons for students of educational organizations, and during a training meeting for corporate volunteers, a quest dedicated to eco-habits. Among other events in which the volunteers participated, there were subbotniks in the Main Botanical Garden named after N.V. Tsitsina of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a series of meetings “Purely about green”, a useful program within the framework of the competition “Volunteer of Moscow – 2021”.

Volunteers also always actively support the collection of recyclables. To do this, boxes for waste paper, plastic, clothes, batteries, caps, felt-tip pens and pens have been installed in the lobby of the Mosvolonter office. In total, more than 4.6 tons of different fractions of recyclables were collected in 2021.

This year, the resource center also plans to hold environmental events that will draw the attention of residents of the capital to the issues of eco-volunteering. Muscovites will be able to help animals that live in nature reserves, learn how to consume consciously and engage in environmental education. Training internships in the regions are planned for the most active environmental volunteers.
