Regional Tuberculosis Hospital No. 1 of the GUFSIN is the largest penitentiary multidisciplinary medical institution beyond the Urals. The hospital has 16 medical departments, including the phthisiatric department, pulmonary surgery, therapeutic, infectious diseases, 3 surgical departments, resuscitation, etc. It has modern diagnostic equipment that allows early detection of dangerous diseases.

In KTB-1, convicts have the opportunity to receive emergency and planned ophthalmological care, there is an ophthalmological round-the-clock hospital with 10 beds, as well as two fully staffed ophthalmological rooms: for providing assistance to somatic patients and for patients with tuberculosis.

Microsurgical treatment of cataracts in convicts in the hospital is carried out using the universal ophthalmological system “Optimed Profi”. This method allows cataract removal by ultrasound lens fragmentation (phacoemulsification) followed by implantation of an artificial lens.

For two years of using the ophthalmological system in KTB-1, doctors restored the sight of more than 200 convicts from different regions of Russia: Karelia, Kalmykia, Bashkiria, Stavropol and Khabarovsk Territories, Lipetsk, Volgograd, Kirov, Kemerovo, Irkutsk, Belgorod, Tyumen, Kurgan, Pskov, Chelyabinsk areas.

– Modern surgery is much more comfortable and easier for the patient. Previously, recovery was quite difficult and required a stay in the hospital for 2-3 weeks. Now the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, the length of the patient’s stay in the hospital has been reduced to 4 days, – said the head of the Medical Unit-24 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia Anton Petrov.
