They decided to name the baby Asterisk.

In project “Active Citizen” ended vote, in which they chose a name for a yak cub from the Moscow Zoo. The project participants decided to name the baby Asterisk because of the white spot on her forehead, said Alexander Pishchelko, head of the New Management Technologies State Institution, which is responsible for the development of the Active Citizen project.

“It was this option that got the most votes — over 35 percent. In total, more than 167 thousand people took part in the voting,” he said.

In second place in popularity was the name Elsa – that was the name of the baby, because she was born in winter and is not afraid of the cold, like the heroine of the cartoon “Frozen”. 25% of participants voted for this option.

The zoo staff themselves, who have been watching the cub since birth, would like to give the animal the name Fekla. This proposal was supported by over 24 percent of “active citizens”.

“We are very pleased that so many caring people responded to the call to choose a name for our wonderful cub. The little female yak has become close to all of us, and for good reason: she is very cheerful, active, inquisitive. A real star of the zoo. We invite everyone to admire it!” – said Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.

More than six percent of voters submitted their own name ideas. Another nine percent chose the option “Difficult to answer.”

A domestic yak cub was born at the center for the reproduction of rare animal species in December last year. The girl is distinguished by a contrasting color: she has a black back and a white tail, a belly and golf shoes on her hind legs.

Her parents’ names are Kora and Mikhail, they also live in the Moscow Zoo. For the mother, this is the first offspring, but she got used to the new role. And the two-month-old Asterisk is already running briskly around the enclosure.

The domestic yak belongs to the species of artiodactyls. They are used as beasts of burden, as well as for milk and wool. The main visual feature of yaks is thick long hair hanging below the belly. The weight of males can reach 500 kilograms, females – 330 kilograms.

Names for animals from the Moscow Zoo are not chosen by “active citizens” for the first time. They have already named Khatangoy polar bear rescued by gold miners in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, andgave the name of Tompa to a she-bear evacuated from Yakutia. These votes received a great response.

Project “Active Citizen” has been operating since 2014, during which time more than 5.7 million people have joined it. Participants decide which streets, courtyards and parks need to be improved, how city clinics, libraries, multifunctional centers should work, and also choose events for festivals and holidays. Muscovites took part in more than five thousand votes.

Decisions supported by a majority of votes are implemented. The changes that have taken place in the city thanks to Muscovites are displayed on online map. More than 1700 objects have already been applied to it. And you can evaluate the changes in the rubric “Pulse of the capital”.

Project participants can accumulate points and send them to charity if they wish.

The Active Citizen project is being developed Department of Information Technologies of Moscow and the state treasury institution “New Management Technologies”.
