On the eve of the 125th anniversary of the Polytechnic University, the “For Merit” insignia, the highest form of reward for services to the university, was established. 96 Polytechnic students have already received an award from the hands of SPbPU Rector Andrei Rudsky. These are professors and young teachers, staff and students, as well as Polytechnic graduates and representatives of the university’s partner companies. Today we will tell you more about the insignia.

In the time of Emperor Alexander I awarded the award “For diligence”, it was received by peasants and burghers for various services to the government. The medal was worn on the St. Andrew’s, Alexander’s and St. George’s (for battle honors) ribbons. During the reign of Emperor Nicholas II marked a wide range of people, including women, for various services rendered to the government, as well as lower ranks – for overtime service. After 1917, the awards were discontinued.

On the eve of our university’s anniversary, the memorial sign was revived. Leonid Tokar, Chief Specialist of the Museum of SPbPU History, was the initiator, and the university administration supported the idea. Leonid Tokar, a member of the Standing Commission on Departmental Heraldry of the Heraldic Council under the President of the Russian Federation, made the sketch and description of the sign.

The Regulations on the badge were approved by the Academic Council of SPbPU on April 24 last year. Citizens of the Russian Federation and foreign citizens who have made a significant contribution to the development of scientific, educational, innovative, international, industrial, sports, recreational, cultural, educational and other areas of the university, to the improvement of material, technical and social infrastructure, to increasing the significance of Polytechnic within the country and in the international educational space, for active charitable activities and other services to the university can be presented for the award.

The award has the shape of a nine-pointed radiant star. The central element is a round medallion of emerald green enamel, in the field of which the emblem of Polytechnic is depicted. The medallion is framed by a belt of emerald green color, around the circumference there is an inscription: “Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University”. By means of an ear and a ring the sign is connected with a gold-colored metal block with a moiré ribbon. In the jubilee year for the Polytechnic, a gold-colored overlay in the form of the numbers “125” framed by a laurel sprig was placed on the block. On the reverse side there is an inscription “For Merit”, in the lower part – the number of the insignia.
