As part of the International Exhibition and Forum “Russia” in the Rosneft pavilion at VDNKh, representatives of the Company and the Whole Genome Sequencing Center presented the genetic initiative “100,000 Me” to visitors. Its goal is to read the genomes of 100 thousand Russians to develop the diagnosis of genetically determined and socially significant diseases, develop new approaches to their therapy and create appropriate drugs. The project is being implemented by the Center with the support of Rosneft.

Director of the Department of Scientific and Technical Development and Innovation of the Company, Alexander Pashali, told the guests of the pavilion that one of the unique features of the project is the formation of a large-scale database of full-genome sequences of Russian residents.

“Our task for the near future is to form a database of 100 thousand full-genome sequences of Russians. We are not just engaged in some kind of import substitution, we are creating something that others do not do. And over the past year, we have already formed a database of 25 thousand entries – all of them are submitted by residents of our country,” Pashali said.

According to him, despite the general similarity of the genomes of people living in different parts of the planet, the population of different countries has its own specific characteristics, the knowledge of which directly affects the effectiveness of medical diagnostics and methods of treating complex hereditary diseases.

Alina Demkina, a researcher at the Center and a graduate of the master’s program “Genomics and Human Health” created by Moscow State University together with Rosneft, said that the database of genetic information created as part of the project has already become the largest in the country. “The project is truly unique, there is no other like it,” she noted.

The Center for Whole Genetic Sequencing cooperates with the Government of the Russian Federation under the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies, the main technological partner of which is Rosneft. To date, the Center has already received about 34 thousand genetic samples, of which more than 25 thousand have already been processed. As a result, about 14 thousand people received their genetic portraits. This makes the Center’s database the largest in Russia. Rosneft employees throughout the country act as volunteers and donate genetic material to fill it.

From January 16 to 21, the Company’s site hosts Genetics Week, during which scientists tell exhibition guests about advanced technologies and developments in the field of the science of heredity.

Over the weekend, the pavilion will host open days for Moscow State University (January 20) and MIPT (January 21). Representatives of universities will talk about master’s programs in the field of genetics prepared jointly with Rosneft. Also on January 21, geneticist Irina Zhegulina will present the book “Genetic Lottery.” After the presentation, all listeners will be able to take part in a quiz and win an autographed copy.

The international exhibition and forum “Russia” is held by decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin from November 4, 2023 to April 12, 2024 on the territory of VDNKh. The Rosneft exposition is located in a pavilion built according to the author’s design project. The pavilion’s digital equipment and interactive exhibits tell visitors about the history of the oil industry and the Company, its prospects, scientific developments and social projects.

You can find out about the main events of the Genetics Week and the time of their holding on the official pages of PJSC NK Rosneft on social networks. The operating schedule of the Company’s pavilion is according to the exhibition schedule.
