As part of the Day of Sports and Tourism at the international exhibition and forum “Russia” at VDNKh, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko held a plenary session “Sports and Tourism. Synergy of development”. The event was also attended by the Minister of Economic Development of Russia Maxim Reshetnikov, the Minister of Sports of Russia Oleg Matytsin, the Governor of the Primorsky Territory, Chairman of the State Council Commission on Tourism, Physical Culture and Sports Oleg Kozhemyako, member of the Expert Council under the Government of Russia, Chairman of the Council of the Federal Territory “Sirius” Elena Shmeleva, representatives of business structures.

At the opening of the Day of Sports and Tourism, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko emphasized: “For about 2.5 months, the exhibition “Russia”, organized on the initiative of President Vladimir Putin, has been warmly welcoming guests from all corners of our country and other countries. More than 5 million people appreciated the achievements and capabilities of the country – its regions and economy.”

At the plenary session, Dmitry Chernyshenko spoke about the strategic connection between the fields of sports and tourism. “The synergy of tourism and sports influences the creation of new points of attraction, the development of regions and the health of citizens. Sports facilities are becoming points of attraction for major events and drivers of the development of mass tourism, and tourism infrastructure facilities are becoming places for holding sports gatherings. Tourism creates demand for the products and services of many other industries – transport, housing and communal services, catering, culture, construction. There is a certain magic in numbers, if you look at the data from the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Sports: at the end of 2023, we exceeded the figures for domestic tourist flow at the pre-Covid level in 2019 – this is over 75 million people. This practically coincides with the number of people involved in sports in our country – 77 million people. It is important to continue achieving all the goals set by the President of Russia and ensure the independence and technological sovereignty of our country,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko.

“When developing measures to support the industry, the Ministry of Economic Development is guided, among other things, by the growing interest of tourists in sports and a healthy lifestyle. With the help of the mechanism of special economic zones, the country’s largest ski resorts are developing, and the preferential lending program within the framework of the national tourism project can now be used to develop the infrastructure of ski resorts,” said Maxim Reshetnikov.

Russians are increasingly traveling around the country. Over the 11 months of 2023, there will be an increase of 20% in tourist trips or by 12 million people. The geography of travel is also expanding. The North Caucasus showed an increase in tourist trips 2 times higher than the Russian average.

“Hosting sporting events enhances the tourism image of regions and becomes an impetus for future investment, helps develop the local economy and attract business. Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Kaliningrad, Sochi, Yekaterinburg, Vladivostok, Krasnoyarsk, Yakutsk – these and many other cities have been significantly transformed in anticipation of major sports tournaments. Russia has always been and remains a pioneer in creating new competition formats. We will continue to further develop the national sports system, create conditions for mass sports and elite sports and are confident that sport is and will be the norm of life for every Russian,” said Oleg Matytsin.

General Director of the Development Institute Kavkaz.RF Andrey Yumshanov noted the special attention of the state to the development of the North Caucasus.

“Following the infrastructure we created, large investors came to Elbrus, the summer tourist flow to the resorts is becoming comparable to the winter, we are actively building new points of attraction – a seaside resort on the Caspian Sea, ski resorts Veduchi and Mamison in Chechnya and North Ossetia. It’s safe to say that state support measures for the tourism and sports industry are already resulting in an increase in tourist flows, the development of small businesses locally, and therefore an improvement in people’s quality of life,” said Andrey Yumshanov.

In 2024, Russia will organize the Future Games and the BRICS Games, which will be held in Kazan, Children of Asia in Yakutsk, Children of Primorye in Vladivostok, Friendship Games in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. The All-Russian Winter Spartakiad of the Strongest will open. The Russian-Chinese Youth Games are planned to be held in Sakhalin and the Far East in 2026.

Dmitry Chernyshenko spoke about the unique International Multi-Sports Tournament “Future Games”, which allows for the active development of sports and tourism.

“Games of the Future” is the main phygital tournament, the concept of which implements the principle of harmonious development, combining e-sports and classical sports. “Games of the Future” is one of the results of the Decade of Science and Technology, announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kazan is ready to welcome guests, media representatives, athletes and fans from around the world with typical Russian hospitality. The business program of the Games will open up new opportunities for international cooperation not only in the field of sports, but also in the fields of science, innovation, the gaming industry, and the creative economy. Guests of the “Games of the Future” will see an image of Russia that combines cultural identity and innovation,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
