SPbPU and United Metallurgical Company JSC approved the Work Program for scientific, technical and strategic cooperation for the period from 2024 to 2027 as part of an agreement between the university and the company. The documents were signed by the first vice-rector of the Polytechnic University, Vitaly Sergeev, and the director for technology and product development at OMK, Pavel Stepanov.

JSC OMK is one of the world leaders in the production of large-diameter pipes. The company produces pipes, railway wheels, sheet metal and other metal products for the largest energy, industrial and transport companies in Russia. Among them are Gazprom, Russian Railways, Rosneft, Sibur, KAMAZ, etc.

In 2022-2023, Polytech and the Vyksa Metallurgical Plant, part of the OMK group, successfully tested pipes for transporting hydrogen. Based on the research results, a decision was made to expand cooperation.

“In 2021, we signed a roadmap for interaction, this was the first step towards systematizing the work of the Polytechnic and the OMK company,” said Nikita Shaposhnikov, executive director of the Scientific and Technological Complex “New Technologies and Materials”. “We have implemented almost everything planned and are interested in developing new topics.”

First Vice-Rector Vitaly Sergeev thanked the representatives of the OMK company for their joint systematic work. “Our experience shows that this is now the most effective format of partnership activities,” he noted. — We solve complex, complex problems, and the company needs to understand what the result of working with the university will be. The second topic we are working on together is hydrogen transportation. We have completed the first stage, we have received initial knowledge that we will expand.”

Pavel Stepanov highly appreciated the conference held at the end of last year “Oil and gas infrastructure on permafrost soils” and said that the OMK company is ready to enter the ecosystem of partners, which was mentioned by the director of technological development of Gazprom Neft, Alexey Vashkevich.

The work program for scientific, technical and strategic cooperation between SPbPU and JSC OMK includes research and development of new types of pipe products intended for use in special conditions, as well as continued research into materials for resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. This is necessary to justify the possibility of using OMK products for the emerging hydrogen energy infrastructure and ensuring the safety of hydrogen technologies.
