Russian applicants filed 123 thousand trademark applications under the national procedure. This is almost 36% more than a year earlier. Deputy Minister of Economic Development Maxim Kolesnikov stated this during the panel discussion “Regional brands – tools for increasing the investment and tourist attractiveness of the region.” The event was also attended by the heads of Rospatent Yuri Zubov and Roskachestvo Maxim Protasov, representatives of the Federation Council, regions and industry organizations.

According to the Deputy Minister, individuals are actively involved in registering brands.

“Since June 2023, when the law on registration of trademarks by citizens came into effect, almost 9.5 thousand applications have been received from individuals,” emphasized Maxim Kolesnikov.

One of the ways to register regional brands is to register geographical indications (GIs) and appellations of origin (AO). At the moment, 335 GIs and ATMs are registered. Linking brands to geographic “coordinates” not only opens up additional opportunities for manufacturers to promote in international markets, but also increases consumer confidence in a specific product.

“State registration imposes obligations on the manufacturer to produce goods of known, often famous quality, in a specific territory with specific characteristics and properties. The consumer obviously trusts them,” emphasized Maxim Kolesnikov.

Another approach could be registration of a trademark by a region or a structure subordinate to regional authorities. The rights to use such a trademark are granted to trusted organizations from the relevant constituent entity of the Russian Federation that ensure the proper level of quality.

The promotion of brands is also facilitated by the conclusion of trilateral agreements between the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, Rospatent and the regions, within the framework of which training activities on intellectual property issues are carried out.

The high importance of regional brands was noted by the Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture Liliya Gumerova.

“A regional brand is the unique identity of a region that distinguishes it from others. It can be associated with geographic features, history, culture, natural attractions, and it helps create a unique perception and understanding of the region among potential investors and tourists,” the senator said.

Supporting regional brands is the key to their development and growth in the quality of the goods they represent, says Yury Zubov, head of Rospatent.

“It is extremely important that our regional brands develop at a faster pace. Regional authorities should help businesses identify products that are traditional for the region and have a “geographical reference” and register them with Rospatent. For our part, we will take care of reliable legal protection of such regional brands and will assist in their promotion in every possible way,” said Yuri Zubov.
