Sofia Sorokina, a 4th year student of Management in Sports and Fitness Industry, knows exactly the answer to this question. This is a rare case on our website – the material is written entirely by its heroine. Be like Sofia, tell other students about your positive experience.

In my first year as an athlete, I was interested in how sport can help children with disabilities. And I started to implement a project on popularization of adaptive sports in the project activities classes at SUU. When Christina Olegovna (Head of the Department of Youth Policy and Educational Work, assistant of the Department of Health Management and Sports Industry IUPS&BC) called students of my department to help organize an open tournament on adaptive hockey among the blind and visually impaired, I agreed without hesitation. I liked this direction and chose the popularization of adaptive hockey as the topic of my thesis.

My project includes cooperation with the biggest ice hockey team in Russia, Fortuna, and consists of informational support of the team’s activities in social networks. For example, publishing information about players, video interviews and scientific articles about the impact of adaptive sports on the socialization of children with visual impairments.

I would like to note the important role of my mentor, the founder of the ANO resource center “One Family”, the coordinator of the hockey team “Fortuna” Belarëva Alina Borisovna, here is how she talks about the importance of the development of adaptive hockey in Russia: “In other countries blind hockey has been developing for more than 50 years. We should not lag behind them. When the international championship takes place, we must represent our country in this discipline in a worthy manner”.

Today, more and more often teachers at SUU are encouraging students to take part in volunteer activities. I fully agree with their point of view, because this experience can have a positive impact on your self-determination and further placement in your specialty.
