The Polytechnic University was visited by a delegation from the world’s leading university in China – Tsinghua University, strategic partner of SPbPU. The history of cooperation between the two universities began in 1950, when the first specialists from China came to study in Leningrad. The partnership agreement between LPI and Tsinghua University, concluded in 1987, became one of the first full-scale agreements between universities of the USSR and China. Universities have become leading in their countries and an important role in this was played by close ties between scientific groups and constant support from management in the implementation of many joint scientific and educational projects.

The group of master’s and graduate students who visited SPbPU represents a wide range of areas of study at Tsinghua University – aerospace research, IT, a number of engineering areas, earth and life sciences, biomedicine, sociology and management. The delegation was headed by Professor of the School of Marxism Wang Chuanli and Deputy Dean of the National Higher College of Engineers Professor Wang Zhenmo.

Academic mobility has been and remains one of the most important components of cooperation between our universities. The practice of study visits for Tsinghua University students has evolved over the years andresumed with renewed vigor after the pandemic. A visit to the key laboratories of the Polytechnic University and an acquaintance with the SPbPU campus is included in the training programs for the best students of the Chinese university.

During the visit, students got acquainted with the achievements of SPbPU in the field of information technology and research projects implemented using the Polytechnic supercomputer. In the laboratory “Industrial Stream Data Processing Systems” of NIS SPbPU, guests were presented with two educational and demonstration systems based on VR technologies: a VR laboratory for training in working with gas pumping units of compressor stations and virtual stands for laboratory work in the discipline “Life Safety”. Interactive VR applications were created as part of a program to improve the quality of education and training, which is being implemented by SPbPU together with PJSC Gazprom.

And about. Vice-Rector for Advanced Projects Maria Vrublevskaya welcomed the delegation, emphasizing the main mission of SPbPU: The main strategic goal of our university is to close the personnel shortage of research engineers both in our country and in states friendly to Russia. Our scale and range of training areas is so great that the Polytechnic University closes 6.5% of this deficit in the country. In this, our universities are similar, since Tsinghua University is also a leader in the training and formation of the country’s engineering elite.

Maria Vrublevskaya told the delegation from China about the promising directions for the development of our university and the potential that can be used in the future to expand areas of cooperation. First of all, we are talking about training high-level engineers to solve breakthrough problems in industry and national development. Professor Wang Zhenmo, in his presentation, presented Tsinghua University’s new approach to working with talented youth and spoke about the newly created structure – the National Higher College of Engineers.

The good news is that our cooperation is developing simultaneously in academic mobility and in many educational areas, for example, Summer Schools, as well as in science. There are examples of successful joint research projects in electronics, aerospace, energy, and technosphere safety. It is impossible not to mention very important humanitarian areas, for example, the “Oriental Studies in Russia” project, which involves our two universities, as well as institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Any partnership initiatives are always supported by both universities,” noted Ekaterina Belyaevskaya, head of the department of international interuniversity cooperation.

Wang Chuanli thanked for the warm welcome: Polytechnic University and Tsinghua University have a long and fruitful history of cooperation. Our great scientists were graduates of your university, for example, academician Ni Weidou. And it is joint interaction, scientific projects, and academic mobility that make our universities one of the leaders in their countries, and not vice versa. In the 50s of the last century, many Russian specialists worked in China and, in particular, in Tsinghua. And we would like to continue this tradition.

Wang Chuanli hopes to expand and develop promising and long-term cooperation in new educational and research projects. He congratulated the polytechnic students on the upcoming Chinese New Year. Universities will strengthen student exchanges, cultural and humanitarian cooperation between our universities. Colleagues emphasized the importance of academic exchanges and agreed to continue such study visits.
