The digital environment is becoming an integral part of the educational process. During the pandemic, vast experience has been gained in using ICT not only directly for studying, but also for organizing educational processes, as well as for building communication with students and their parents. However, a number of problems associated with the use of digital devices and services in education remain relevant today.

In order to assess the prevalence of these problems, the National Research University Higher School of Economics, together with the Sferum company, conducted a large-scale survey of teachers about the use of digital technologies in their work.

Problems associated with the digital environment at school

On the one hand, teachers have now made great progress in digital literacy. Thus, 95% of the surveyed teachers use computers daily in the educational process; almost a third are interactive whiteboards. At the same time, video conferencing systems, popular during distance learning, are now not so in demand: almost two-thirds of teachers use them no more than several times a month (see Fig. 1).

I came to work at a school right before the pandemic, and there, like it or not, I had to use it,” says one of the physics teachers interviewed. “I had to spend four hours, and sometimes more, on Skype with high school students, since they had to take the Unified State Exam in physics, and they had to be prepared somehow. Naturally, this was the only method available. Legally, we did not have the right to collect them at school, so we used Skype, Discord, and Zoom.

But at the same time, the problem of effective use of electronic services and devices still remains relevant (see Fig. 2). The majority of teachers – almost 62% – use digital devices and services every day to search for tasks for lessons; 35% of teachers regularly prepare presentations for lessons using ICT.

However, to solve more complex problems that require a high level of digital literacy, teachers resort to ICT help less often. For example, almost 29% of teachers surveyed practically do not use online platforms for creating homework, despite the fact that such services can significantly save time both on selecting material and checking student solutions. Teachers do not trust digital platforms when conducting tests and assessments. In addition, 32% of teachers refused to use electronic textbooks.

The challenges of digital communication

The other side of the problems of the digital environment at school is the difficulties in online communication. Despite the fact that modern means of communication and instant messengers allow you to quickly contact all participants in the educational process, problems often arise here:

― 31% of teachers often encounter situations of misunderstanding when communicating with parents via digital devices;

– 17% of teachers noted that they find it difficult to understand the technology even after receiving explanations (for example, after contacting technical support); – 30% of teachers believe that new technologies are not designed for use by people without special technical or IT knowledge and skills .

Although the scale of such problems themselves may be small, their accumulation can provoke increased stress and discomfort when using ICT. And this is another step towards professional burnout for teachers.

Risks of using the digital environment at school

● while working at the computer, a feeling of fatigue quickly arises (24%);● reluctance to use digital devices in personal free time (41%);● discomfort, pain during prolonged work at the computer (49%). Thus, a significant proportion of the surveyed teachers note the risks of technological burnout associated with the active introduction of the digital environment into the educational process. However, only a few teachers are familiar with methods for effectively using the digital environment to help reduce such stress.

Ways to solve problems

Of course, the most effective way to deal with such stress is psychological support and unloading of teachers. Nevertheless, digital services can also make their contribution by reducing the workload of teachers.

Thus, 13% of teachers surveyed believe that the competent use of digital technologies can significantly reduce the workload. For example, using digital platforms for homework and tests can save time on checking them, and also allows you to get detailed statistics on the success of both the entire class and individual students. And this, in turn, makes it possible to individualize the learning process and make it more effective.

This word, which has recently become famous, allows you to keep up with everything, sift out the unimportant, separate the wheat from the chaff,” says one of the primary school teachers interviewed. – And if we learn this, then technology will only help us. It’s no longer possible – “digital” children are now studying in schools, they see the world completely differently, and therefore we must keep up with them.

More than half of the teachers surveyed – 56% – actively use instant messengers to inform parents not only about their children’s grades, but also about all aspects of school life. Almost a quarter of teachers note that digital technologies allow them to successfully involve parents in the educational process of children, and such communication helps to establish proper interaction between teachers, parents and students.

Thanks to this format, many avenues of communication with parents have become possible,” another primary school teacher interviewed shares her experience. – When you are not using your personal resources, you communicate with parents as a legal representative of the school, transparent to the administration. This is a very correct thing even to protect the teacher in conflict situations that sometimes arise in the process of communicating with parents.

Teachers note that for competent communication it is important to build boundaries of interaction in advance and separate work time and personal life. Thus, some teachers prefer to use exclusively corporate email for online communication, others create separate work accounts in instant messengers and social networks. This allows you to better maintain balance and also protects you from burnout.

Before sharing your contacts – WhatsApp, mobile phone – you need to indicate your working hours, and say that after this time I will not answer, set a fait accompli, says one of the history teachers. – Yes, class teachers should probably act differently, there are various emergency situations, but an ordinary subject teacher should not be on call 24/7. As for electronic media, there is no need to get too carried away with all the programs and try to make the lesson entertaining. Children can get oversaturated with this, and then they will not be interested. You need to dose it, that is, you don’t need to do online tests every day or watch different videos. Classic forms of work are also important, and these can also be enjoyed.

Another 35% of teachers surveyed agreed that digital technologies allow them to better organize their daily lives, in particular, by transferring routine activities to “technological outsourcing”. Thus, prompt communication, along with the effective distribution of working time, allows you to establish a balance between work and personal life , which helps to significantly reduce the risk of burnout.
