We introduce you to the unusual Conference of the HSE Lyceum and invite schoolchildren, students, teachers and university professors to become participants!

A lot of conferences for students are held in Russia. These are just school conferences, city and regional conferences, or with international participation, scientific and scientific-practical conferences. At these conferences, students present their research and projects, and all conferences aim to create an environment that will foster the development of their intellectual and creative potential.

We know that scientists are involved in work at conferences, who give expert assessments and advise schoolchildren, but these are mostly conferences held on a competitive basis, so today we are introducing you to an unusual conference, Conference of the Lyceum of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, and talk with its organizers.

We are trying to create an environment for scientific communication. So that it would be interesting for everyone: schoolchildren, students, teachers, and representatives of big science. For us, the main thing is not competition, not rivalry, not a pseudoscientific approach, but passion for the topic.

Elena Alexandrovna, tell me how the idea to hold the Conference came about?

Elena Aleksandrovna Tyutina, head of the Conference “Science with a Thousand Faces”

Each Lyceum student must write final graduation work, so, we wanted our students to have the opportunity to present this work, but not by competing with someone, but by exchanging experiences, sharing their little discoveries. Then we decided that this would be interesting not only for schoolchildren, but also for students who are also taking their first steps in science. This is how the idea was born to unite all researchers at different levels. We wanted to try to move away from the usual, traditional competitive formats, and try to create an environment in which intellectual communication between researchers of different ages would take place.

Tatyana Nikolaevna, why is the Conference called “Science with a Thousand Faces”? What is the meaning of the name?

Tatyana Nikolaevna Shutova, organizer of the Conference “Science with a Thousand Faces”

This is a metaphorical name. Science is multifaceted. On the one hand, these are completely different areas of knowledge that can overlap, and many questions have already been answered. But how much is still unknown, how many questions science still has to answer! So why can’t these serious questions include those that can be answered by just beginning scientists, today’s schoolchildren, tomorrow’s students, and in the future, we hope, scientists. This is how it happened – different areas of research and different researchers were united – thousands of people.

Maria Lvovna, please tell me why this year the theme of the Conference was “Challenges of the times: from the invention of the wheel to artificial intelligence”?

Maria Lvovna Abramova, organizer of the Conference “Science with a Thousand Faces”

In many ways, each year’s theme is driven by contemporary social issues. And when the idea of holding our own conference arose at the Lyceum, the topic of the coronavirus pandemic was relevant, and we decided to consider it in more detail, and so the name of the first Conference appeared “From the Justinian Plague to Omicron – Pandemics and Their Role in the Life of Society.” And after most of the Covid restrictions were lifted, people felt tired from several years of prohibitions and the inability to lead their usual lifestyle. Therefore, we decided that we could continue the theme of the previous conference and turn to the results of the pandemic, namely the study of stress: and the theme of the second Conference is “Exploring stress: from physiological to cultural.”

In the same year, we noticed that over the five “Covid” years, so many innovative technologies have appeared, many discoveries have been made in various fields of science, which have influenced all areas of life. After all, we live in an era of high technology, and our rapidly changing world, the problems we face, are a challenge of the time. But these challenges existed in every historical period, because throughout history, people, trying to satisfy their needs and simplify their existence, always solve various problems and invent something new. That is why the title of this year’s Conference is “Challenges of the times: from the invention of the wheel to artificial intelligence.”

Alexandra Anatolyevna, what is the purpose of the Conference?

Alexandra Anatolyevna Abramova, organizer of the Conference “Science with a Thousand Faces”

The goal, in our opinion, is quite ambitious. Try to create an environment for scientific communication. So that it would be interesting for everyone: schoolchildren, students, teachers, and representatives of big science. For us, the main thing is not competition, not rivalry, not a pseudoscientific approach, but passion for the topic. Ideally, I would like the communication to take place not only at the Conference, but also to continue afterwards. And in the future, a generation interested in scientific activity has grown up, and strong professional connections have been established.

Tatyana Nikolaevna, what is your (the organizers’) mission?

Mission is probably too strong a word. The main thing for us is that the children learn research approaches. They understood what had already been done in this area, what had not yet been done, and what research could be done in this direction.

We also know that project and research managers often face a number of problems, and we would really like for young scientists not only to develop on our site, but also for teachers to communicate and exchange experience in managing work. And it is also very important that representatives of big science join this dialogue. To unite representatives of different levels, we propose to gather on our site. But it is impossible to solve all these problems in two days of the Conference, so this year we propose to hold a series of consultation meetings and invite both pupils and students, as well as school teachers and university professors, to them.

Alexandra Anatolyevna, why is it worth taking part in the Conference and what does this participation give?

As we said before, the goal of the Conference is to try to create a scientific environment in which schoolchildren, students, and teachers will consider themselves equal colleagues. Therefore, in our opinion, the most valuable thing is communication, as a result of which participants will be able to get acquainted with current research, opinions of professionals, specialists in various fields. It is worth noting that participation in the Conference does not necessarily mean giving a report. Indeed, in addition to “meetings” presenting research results, there will be a large number of master classes, round tables and discussion platforms. Therefore, we are also waiting for those who are just thinking about their first steps in science, and we invite them to become spectators and listeners. And the result of the Conference will be a collection of articles by speakers of research and projects.

And the last question, colleagues, what needs to be done to participate in the Conference?

To participate in the Conference, first of all, you need a desire, a desire to learn something new. Secondly, you must register* as a participant or spectator, and then follow the instructions on Conference website.*You can send your application until February 15 inclusive.

We invite everyone to our Conference and look forward to meeting you!
