February 27 is World Non-Profit Organizations (NPO) Day. It is intended to remind that thousands of people around the world join forces to solve social issues and help others.

There are approximately 10 thousand socially oriented NGOs in the capital, and many of them help people facing serious illnesses. Complex diagnoses are made to both adults and very young children, and charities sometimes become their main hope.

“Sometimes it seems that helping is long, difficult and expensive, but in reality, a few clicks and even a small amount are enough for a good deed. More and more Muscovites are making charity a permanent part of their lives, and we are working to make this process even clearer and more accessible to everyone. An easy way to help is to use the charity service, which contains 88 verified organizations that daily help those who find themselves in difficult situations,” said Ekaterina Dragunova, Chairman

Committee for Public Relations and Youth Policy of the City of Moscow.

How Moscow funds help

There are many examples of how charitable organizations support Muscovites who need help.

So, Leukemia Foundation works with adults with blood cancers, supporting patients at all stages. The organization specifically collects donations for drugs and treatment, promotes obtaining discounted drugs and medical care. In addition, the foundation is engaged in educational activities, fighting myths about cancer, organizing lectures and round tables with the participation of doctors.

“Adults are used to taking responsibility, and it is not always easy for them to ask for help. To solve this problem, we have various communication channels so that anyone can receive up-to-date and reliable information about how the disease progresses and about various treatment methods,” says Yulia Sinitsyna, program director of the Leukemia Foundation.

ORBI Foundation helps people who have suffered a stroke and their families. The organization has a hotline where anyone who wants to know about the symptoms of this pathology can receive free anonymous consultations. If necessary, neurologists, rehabilitation specialists and lawyers join the conversation. Foundation specialists say that spreading knowledge about the disease will prevent up to 80 percent of strokes. In addition, in the premises allocated to the foundation by the city, classes are held for specialized specialists and relatives of residents who have suffered a stroke, and patients themselves can receive free consultation with an occupational therapist there.

Caring for people affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, The “Live Now” Foundation is involved. This disease cannot be cured, but it is possible to improve the quality of life of patients, provide them with hardware and specialized medical care, and also provide the necessary psychological support.

Helps children with serious illnesses fund “Live”. The organization raises funds for targeted treatment, equipment and medicine, and also helps families get to medical centers as soon as possible where they can receive the necessary therapy. The foundation also provides systematic support to children’s oncology and hematology departments: for example, part of the funds collected by the organization through the charity service on in the third quarter of 2023 went to purchase medical stretchers, detergents and consumables for the sponsored department of oncology, hematology and chemotherapy.

Children’s Hearts Foundation helps young patients receive expensive devices – occluders, which are needed for complex open-heart surgeries. Thanks to this program and the philanthropists who support it, timely, high-tech care is becoming available to more children. For example, 11-year-old Sumaya received it. Surgeons successfully implanted an occluder into the girl’s heart, and she is now at home and feeling well.

Gift of Life Foundation Since its founding, the organization has helped more than 85 thousand children. You can read the stories of some of them in fund reports. The foundation’s specialists remind us that there are situations when only with the help of philanthropists can a child quickly receive the most effective and modern treatment. In addition, “Gift of Life” releases the podcast “Cancer Happens,” where he says that cancer is not a reason to despair, but a time to fight.

Today, about one and a half million children live in Russia with severe and rare diseases, they say in Rusfond. Sometimes only a few clinics in the country can help them. Eight-month-old Arpi is among those who were able to receive treatment thanks to philanthropists. The girl required microsurgical reconstruction of the bones of the vault and base of the skull. The most difficult operation was successful, and now the baby’s life is not in danger.
