Thanks to the support of the RN-Uvatneftegaz Company (part of the Rosneft oil and gas production complex), scientists from the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences confirmed the fact of the permanent residence of the Red Book forest reindeer in the Tyumen region. The research is carried out within the framework of the enterprise’s long-term grant program to study the state of populations of various animal species included in the Red Books of the Tyumen region and Russia.

Zoologists conducted photomonitoring in the Uvat district of the Tyumen region. The lenses of camera traps installed near deer trails recorded about 60 individuals of this species. The research made it possible to obtain valuable information about the habits of deer, the population size and to prove the fact of the permanent residence of the Red Book animal in the south of the Tyumen region.

Scientists have found that during the snowless period, deer mainly lead a family-solitary lifestyle, and with the onset of cold weather they gather in herds of several dozen individuals. Research will continue in winter using camera traps and aerial monitoring. Observations will help track the seasonal migration routes of these animals.

The RN-Uvatneftegaz project on the study and conservation of forest reindeer is of great practical importance for the Tyumen region, since there was no up-to-date information about this Red Book animal in the region.

Based on the data obtained, experts will develop measures to preserve the deer’s habitat and create conditions to increase the population size. To provide ungulates with vital minerals, zoologists installed salt licks with fertilizing.

Preserving the environment for future generations is an integral part of Rosneft’s corporate culture. The Company’s subsidiaries implement various programs aimed at preserving and restoring natural resources in the regions of production activity.

In 2023, also with the support of RN-Uvatneftegaz, the Scientific and Analytical Center for Rational Subsoil Use named after. IN AND. Shpilman monitored the condition of large lakes in the region, and specialists from Tyumen State University developed a set of measures to increase the population of rare bird species.

RN-Uvatneftegaz is engaged in the exploration and development of a group of fields located in the Uvat district of the Tyumen region. The Uvat project includes 19 license areas with a total area of more than 25 thousand km2.

In 2022, the RN-Uvatneftegaz company began implementing a program to study the state of populations of rare and endangered animal species included in the Red Books of the Tyumen Region and Russia. Among them are the white-tailed eagle, curlew, black-throated loon, mute swan, osprey and others.
