Samples of wheat variety “SPbGU 300” were solemnly handed over by the head of the department of selection and seed production of wheat and triticale of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “National Grain Center named after P. P. Lukyanenko”, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Lyudmila Bespalova, to the Dean of the Faculty of Biology of the University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Igor Tikhonovich.

Academician Lyudmila Bespalova is a specialist in the field of genetics, selection and seed production of grain crops. She developed and implemented a program to improve traditional, adapt new and develop innovative breeding methods, to create fundamentally new initial breeding material and, on its basis, to develop more advanced varieties of a new generation of wheat (soft, durum, spherococcum, dicoccum, triticale for winter and spring lifestyles) ).

“It all began with St. Petersburg State University. The Department of Genetics of the University is the oldest in Russia. I, like most domestic geneticists and breeders, studied from the textbooks of Mikhail Efimovich Lobashev (he was the dean of the Faculty of Biology of Leningrad State University and the head of the Department of Genetics and Breeding of Leningrad State University. – Note). And I am happy that I live at the same time as Sergei Georgievich Inge-Vechtomov (he was the head of the Department of Genetics and Selection at Leningrad State University and the head of the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology at St. Petersburg State University. – Note), from whose textbooks a new generation of specialists is now studying. We have also always worked closely with Igor Anatolyevich Tikhonovich,” noted academician Lyudmila Bespalova. “Therefore, we had no doubts about the name of the new wheat variety, created in the year of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg State University.”

The “SPbGU 300” variety is a soft winter wheat that is distinguished by high grain quality and genetic resistance to major diseases, including leaf rust, powdery mildew, septoria, yellow rust and fusarium head blight. The new variety has good drought resistance, as well as increased winter hardiness and frost resistance.

“At the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology of St. Petersburg State University there are many methodological developments that are gradually being included in practical selection. After all, today breeders work in close collaboration with geneticists, biotechnologists, physiologists, and biochemists,” emphasized academician Lyudmila Bespalova. — What is traditional selection today? This, along with recombinogenesis, is cell culture and tissue culture, this is mutagenesis, products of genomic and chromosomal engineering, this is selection using genetic and molecular markers, this is a powerful, well-built prebreeding platform, etc. Of course, the recombinogenesis method is the basis of tradition, this is the foundation transition to a new level of adaptation and adaptability. Today, it is impossible to create competitive varieties of a new generation that can produce high yields for a number of years under unpredictable weather conditions for the scale of our country without the latest methods, including biotechnological ones, tools, devices, equipment and laboratories.”

According to the scientist, today breeders track every stage of the life of a new variety.

“Without seed production, the new variety will remain just a sample; it will not be in production. Therefore, simultaneously with the state testing of a variety, its primary and then industrial seed production is necessarily carried out in private farms and agricultural farms. It is worth noting that cereal crops are crops with a large sowing rate. Therefore, to introduce each new variety you need a lot of seeds. And we are doing this: we conclude the necessary agreements, we have a very close connection with production, feedback information for the formation of new breeding programs. And the same will happen with the “SPbGU 300” variety. I am sure that he will occupy an important place in the fields of our country,” noted Lyudmila Bespalova.

The variety “SPbGU 300” has already been recommended for testing and use in the North-Western, Central, Volga-Vyatka, Central Black Earth, North Caucasus and Lower Volga regions of the Russian Federation. After successfully passing the test in field conditions at the country’s state variety plots, the “university” wheat is planned to be used as an improver for the baking properties of grain throughout Russia.

St. Petersburg State University, the first university in Russia, was founded on January 28 (February 8), 1724, when Peter I issued a decree establishing the University and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Today St. Petersburg State University is a world-class scientific, educational and cultural center. In 2024, St. Petersburg University will celebrate its 300th anniversary.

The plan of events to celebrate the University’s anniversary was approved at a meeting of the organizing committee to celebrate the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg State University, which was chaired by Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko. Among such events are appropriation small planet named after St. Petersburg State University, issue of bank cardswith special design, creation of postage stampsdedicated to the history of the first university in Russia, aircraft branding Rossiya Airlines and much more.

By decision of the Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov, 2024 in the Northern capital announced year of St. Petersburg University. On the day of the 300th anniversary of the University, torches will be lit on the Rostral Columns. The Palace Bridge will be decorated with the flags of the University, and public transport will be decorated with its symbols; buildings of St. Petersburg State University will appear on new tourist maps of the city; thematic and historical materials will be placed near them. In May 2024, the University will take part in the celebration of City Day, and the famous alumni holiday “Scarlet Sails” will be dedicated to the anniversaries of St. Petersburg State University and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Also University launched the websitededicated to the upcoming holiday, with information about outstanding university students, scientific achievements and details of preparations for the anniversary.
