On March 2 and 3, the final events of the Polar Bear Days will be held in the Rosneft pavilion at VDNKh as part of the International Exhibition and Forum “Russia”. Thematic days began on February 27, International Polar Bear Day.

Preservation and protection of the polar bear population is one of the areas of Rosneft’s environmental program. The Company’s specialists, together with the country’s leading scientific organizations, study the behavior of animals in the wild. In addition, all polar bears in Russian zoos are under the care of the Company. Rosneft provides maintenance, feeding, and veterinary support for animals, builds and renovates enclosures, and conducts scientific and educational programs.

Over the weekend, a series of educational and entertainment events will continue at the Company’s pavilion, designed for visitors of all ages.

Employees of the Udmurt Zoo will hold a lecture-trip for schoolchildren “In the Footsteps of a Polar Bear” and will play with everyone a new board game, which is also called “In the Footsteps of a Polar Bear”. To win it, you must not only make a successful move, but also correctly answer questions about the inhabitants of the Arctic.

Visitors to the Rosneft pavilion will take part in quizzes about the polar bear and have the opportunity to win special prizes, and at master classes guests will be taught how to draw bears with a pencil. On the screen near the cafe, videos from Russian zoos are constantly shown about the life of polar bears under the care of Rosneft.

On March 2, leading researcher at the A. N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Svetlana Artemyeva, will give two lectures about the main inhabitants of the Arctic: “Walruses are the guardians of the North” and “The polar bear is the master of the Arctic.”

On March 3, World Wildlife Day, leading researcher at the A. N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ilya Mordvintsev will present the results of research on the polar bear and the Atlantic walrus as part of the Rosneft biodiversity conservation program.

Artyom Igorevich Isachenko, Head of the Department of Innovative Offshore Projects at the Company’s Arctic Research Center, will give a lecture “From microbe to walrus – who is Rosneft studying in the Arctic?”, during which he will talk about a new large-scale program for studying the biodiversity of Arctic ecosystems, as well as about expeditions which in the next 4 years will be organized in the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. For the first time, scientists will conduct an aerial survey of polar bears in the Kara Sea, monitor wild reindeer in the region, study the fish of the Yenisei mouth, as well as the nesting sites of valuable bird species. Among other things, scientists will build maps of the ecological sensitivity of the shores of the Yenisei Bay, the adjacent waters of the Kara Sea and the Brekhov Islands national reserve. This will help draw conclusions about the state of the local ecosystem and develop measures for its conservation.

On Sunday, the pavilion’s cinema hall will also host a screening of the documentary “Master of the Arctic”, and then there will be a meeting with the author of the film, television presenter Eleonora Lyubimova. The film “Master of the Arctic” tells about one of the Company’s expeditions to study polar bears and the field work methods of scientists.

Also, participants of the vocal studio “MGIMO – VOICES” of the Moscow Institute of International Relations (University) of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will perform for the guests of the pavilion.

You can find out about the main events at the Rosneft pavilion and their timing on the Rosneft website and the Company’s official pages on social networks. The pavilion’s opening hours follow the exhibition schedule.

PJSC NK Rosneft pays special attention to environmental issues and nature conservation. In collaboration with key scientific institutes of the country, geological, oceanological, hydrometeorological and environmental research is carried out, as well as populations of bioindicator animals in the wild – polar bear, wild reindeer, Atlantic walrus and ivory gull – are studied. In addition, all polar bears in Russian zoos are under the care of the Company. Rosneft provides maintenance, feeding, and veterinary support for animals, builds and renovates enclosures, and conducts scientific and educational programs.

Rosneft has been implementing a comprehensive scientific research program in the Arctic since 2012. The company has already conducted 50 expeditions and collected a unique layer of information about the region. Geological, oceanological, hydrometeorological and environmental research is carried out in collaboration with key scientific institutes of the country. During complex Arctic expeditions, scientists estimate the size of the polar bear population, map the animals’ movement routes, and collect and analyze biological samples of predators. The information obtained is extremely important for the development of the region, since the bear is a bioindicator species of local ecosystems, just like reindeer, walrus and ivory gull.

The expeditions being carried out are unprecedented in their scale. The study of the waters of the northern seas, the seabed, the coastal zone, glaciers and icebergs, as well as bioindicator animals made it possible to collect a unique array of information about the climatic features, nature and fauna of the Arctic.
