Students of the Faculty of Architecture of St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering took part in the II All-Russian Arctic Youth Forum “Arctic: New Generation”. The event took place on March 5 at the Museum of Naval Glory in Kronstadt.

The forum was opened by the head of the project office for the creation of the “Island of Forts” tourist and recreational cluster, Ksenia Shoigu, and the director of the department for work with youth of the Russian Geographical Society, Yana Fedosova.

Young scientists and students came to the forum to talk at a high level about their research and developments that are significant for the Far North. First-year master’s student of the Department of Architectural Design of St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Victoria Ivanova, spoke at the plenary session. She reported on the main results of scientific and project expeditions of St. Petersburg State University of Civil Engineering to Salekhard and the Kola Peninsula. Thanks to such expeditions, the university’s connection with the Arctic regions is developing; students, as part of their diploma design, develop projects that are necessary for the development of polar cities and settlements. Thus, more than 20 projects have already been completed for Salekhard: the Arctic Research Center, the Museum of Science and Technology, a public and business center, hotels, residential buildings, and social infrastructure facilities. On the instructions of the administration of the city of Kovdor, Murmansk region, several variants of projects for the cultural and tourist center of the city have been developed, and design is underway for other cities in this region.

Ekaterina Lachina and Vitaly Klets

In the section “Innovative technologies and infrastructure development of the Arctic zone of Russia,” first-year master’s students of the Department of Architectural Design of St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Vitaly Klets and Ekaterina Lachina presented projects of innovative residential complexes for Salekhard.

“We propose to include covered public spaces in the form of atriums and galleries in the structure of residential complexes, in which it is comfortable to spend time during periods of extreme cold. For housing construction, CLT panels are used, made from several layers of wood glued together. They are energy efficient, environmentally friendly and lighter and stronger than concrete,” explained Vitaly Klets and Ekaterina Lachina.

The forum allowed students not only to present their projects at the federal level, but also to draw attention to the opportunities of SPbGASU to participate in the development of the Russian North.
