Testing using this program allows you to quickly and effectively identify signs of the presence or potential development of ophthalmological diseases in school-age children. When conducting a distant screening examination, signs of decreased visual acuity, the presence of myopia or farsightedness, astigmatism, and retinal pathologies may be detected. Based on the test results, recommendations are made for parents on further monitoring of the child by an ophthalmologist.

— Screening can be performed by a teacher in the classroom and does not require the participation of an ophthalmologist. And this is unique,” notes Alexander Chernyshevsky, one of the program developers as part of a group of specialists from the Novosibirsk branch of the Eye Microsurgery MNTK. — In the Novosibirsk region, screening was carried out in 850 schools, and often parents did not even suspect that their child’s vision was declining. This helped them contact an ophthalmologist in time for specialized help.

— We have integrated an auxiliary function that shows at what distance a person is from the screen – when screening, the main thing is to maintain a certain distance. To do this, we connected a neural network that determines the position of a person,” explains co-developer, NSU programmer Sergei Paul. “The next step in our development will be the use of artificial intelligence to control the position of a person’s eyes in front of the monitor.

The complex equipment consists of a monitor, a computer mouse and a smart box developed by NSU scientists. A smart box is a small box that fits in the palm of your hand. Conducting a screening examination using a new software and hardware system does not require special knowledge and is easily accessible to a teacher or other school employee responsible for testing in their educational institution.

Conducting a remote screening examination of visual acuity using modern means of communication, developed in 2007 by the Novosibirsk branch of the Eye Microsurgery MNTK, allows you to examine all secondary school students at least 2 times during the school year, to specifically identify schoolchildren who require a more in-depth examination in medical conditions institutions. Over 15 years of using the program, more than 470,000 tests have been carried out in more than 100 localities in 13 regions of Russia.

As a result of the joint development of MNTK and NSU, a hardware and software complex was created with the introduction of artificial intelligence technologies, which can significantly improve the quality of screening testing using this program.
