March 27 at the State Biological Museum named after K.A. Timiryazev in pavilion No. 31 “Geology” at VDNKh opens the exhibition “The World of Primroses”. Visitors will be able to see the very first flowers of spring, including snowdrops, corydalis, white flowers and others, in the drawings of artists – members of the Russian Society of Lovers of Botanical Illustration. This is an open project that brings together lovers of depicting plants in painting, arts and crafts, and book graphics.

The first spring flowers appear in well-lit places, when the snow has not yet melted everywhere. Most of them belong to the ecological group of ephemeroids. They bloom for a short time, then the above-ground part of the plants disappears, and the rhizomes or bulbs remain in the soil. This allows galanthus, scillas, crocuses and corydalis to bloom in the next season.

Other plants go under the snow with green leaves, these are the so-called winter green plants. Last year’s foliage, at the first rays of spring sun, nourishes the plants and allows flowers to bloom, even when the snow is still on the ground.

Many of the artists whose drawings can be seen at the exhibition use watercolors in their works. Due to their translucent effect, these paints are best suited for depicting spring flowers.

The exhibition will also feature works using the ancient technique of traditional Chinese painting, Mogufa. Artists do not use contours and strokes, but colorful spots or lines.

You can visit the exhibition until June 2. Opening hours: Wednesday – Sunday from 11:00 to 19:00.

The organization of the exhibition contributes to the development of the national project “Culture”. You can find out more about this and other national projects implemented in Moscow Here.
