A new season of the educational and tourist project “Along the Way of Great Discoveries” has started. Students aged 10 to 18 and teachers from schools and colleges in the capital can join the project.

This year, participating teams are offered three tracks to choose from. The “Explorer’s Path” track invites to study the history and culture of our country, natural objects and phenomena. The “Volunteer Track” is suitable for those who want to dedicate their expedition to environmental protection or socially significant projects. The “Path of the Discoverer” track is designed for students who plan to develop a new tourist route related to the biography of one of the great travelers of the past and then follow it.

“The program “On the Way of Great Discoveries” is successfully developing. Now not only research tourists, but also those who are interested in history and volunteering can realize themselves in it. Participants get acquainted with the nature and cultural heritage of Russia, improve their social skills, and get acquainted with a healthy lifestyle. I have no doubt that they will return from the expeditions with new impressions and, most importantly, with materials that will serve the development of educational tourism,” said Maria Andrianova, Director of the Moscow Center for Educational Practices.

To participate, teams have until April 15 to download application form from the website of the Moscow Center for Educational Practices, fill it out and send it to the project curator’s e-mail: travelschool@edu.mos.ru. At the first stage, children under the guidance of teachers will undergo training at the Moscow Children and Youth Center for Ecology, Local History and Tourism. This will help to develop the concept and description of the trip. Those who have chosen a multi-day hike will have to demonstrate their physical preparation – to pass the standards of the GTO complex “Tourist hike with the test of tourist skills”. The rest of the teams will participate in a tourist festival of the urban environment.

After that, the young travelers will set off on a route they have designed. During the hike, they should conduct research in accordance with the chosen track. They will share their discoveries and impressions with their peers in social networks.

The results of each team’s research, travel diaries, as well as videos and photos shot on the way will be reviewed by an expert committee. At the final stage, the children will also have to defend their projects. The best works will become the basis for the creation of new tourist routes.

Last academic year, schoolchildren and college students in the capital studied Vitus Bering’s Great Northern Expedition, Afanasy Nikitin’s journey along the Volga River, and the path of Kurbat Ivanov, the Russian explorer who discovered Lake Baikal. The children walked along the chosen routes and then defended their projects at the final conference.

The educational and tourist project “Along the Way of Great Discoveries” is implemented by the Moscow Center for Educational Practices of the Moscow Metropolitan Area Department of Education and Science jointly with the Moscow Children and Youth Center for Ecology, Local History and Tourism.

Patriotic and physical culture and sports activities for young people are in line with the objectives of the Patriotic Education and Every Child’s Success projects of the Education national project.
