VDNKh is the only public urban space in the capital where trees unique for Moscow grow on the same territory and in large numbers. For example, such as ginkgo bilobast, Ussuri pear, Amur velvet, Serbian spruce or sumac deerfoot.

There are a total of 67,615 trees and 141,241 shrubs at VDNKh and Ostankino Park, including 25,497 rose bushes. It takes a lot of effort from the specialists of the VDNKh landscaping and improvement department to keep all these plants in good order.

About green spaces are taken care of all year round. However, one of the most important periods, when timely care determines the entire future life of plants, is spring. Soon trees, shrubs, other annual and perennial plants at VDNKh will delight visitors with young green foliage and delicate flowers. In order for the main exhibition of the country to open the warm season in all its splendor, the necessary gardening works are already underway.

Shape the crowns and remove anything excessive

Pruning of woody plants is the main work carried out by VDNH specialists in spring. The first pruning of the year is done at the beginning of spring, when the frost is over, but sap movement has not started, the buds on the branches have not started to grow, i.e. the tree is in a dormant state.

Sanitary pruning removes withered and winter damaged branches. This pruning helps to maintain the health of the tree and prolong its life cycle. In addition, timely pruning prevents dry branches and limbs from breaking and falling.

Forming (or shaping) pruning is necessary for the crown of the tree. If sanitary pruning is carried out throughout the year as needed and is required for all woody plants of VDNKh, then shaping pruning in spring is necessary mainly for fruit trees, so that they bloom abundantly and give fruits. Pruning is performed by special specialists – arborists. With the help of techniques and tools they form the crown skeleton of young trees: cut out weak and shorten too long branches, as well as correct the shape of the crown of adult trees, if it is formed unevenly.

“A properly formed crown is wide, symmetrical and openwork, letting in a lot of sunlight. A tree with such a crown is not just aesthetically pleasing. It is better protected from diseases and insect pests, it will not warp and break under the weight of excess branches, its flower buds and then fruits will develop successfully,” said Lola Samsonenko, Chief Dendrologist of the Department of Landscaping and Improvement of VDNKh.

More than 2.5 thousand apple, pear and cherry trees have already undergone the pruning procedure in the Michurinsky Garden, as well as pears of Michurinsky varieties on the pear alley of VDNKh, which is a cultural heritage site of federal significance. Pears are the oldest trees in the exhibition area, their age is about 75 years.

Saturate the soil with oxygen and nutrients

In the first decade of April, specialists remove leaves that fell in the fall, and then dig and loosen the soil under the trees. Digging up the boles allows to destroy insect pests hibernating in the soil and improves aeration, i.e. provides soil oxygenation.

The next step is to apply fertilizer. Melt water has washed useful substances out of the soil, and young plants need help now. Spring fertilization based on complex organic fertilizers will help to start vegetative processes, increase green mass and protect trees from diseases. Vermicompost is used at VDNKh for these purposes. This is an environmentally friendly fertilizer, a product of processing agricultural waste by earthworms.

Michurinsky Garden, Sheremetyevskaya Oak Tree, Pear Alley, Syringarium, Sochi Hill, Garden of Five Senses – just a small part of the VDNKh green areas. All of them were created so that visitors could enjoy the natural wealth and learn to appreciate it: to think more often about ecology and cleanliness of the environment. Obtaining such experience is a significant part of environmental education and enlightenment within the framework of the national project “Ecology”. An important condition for preserving the diversity and beauty of numerous plants of VDNKh is the careful attitude to them on the part of the exhibition guests. This is necessary for them to enjoy their healthy and well-groomed appearance for many years to come.

In total, more than one million perennial and annual plants will bloom on the territory of the country’s main exhibition this spring. Among them are snowdrops (or galanthus), crocuses, and scillas. In addition, in April, botanical tulips, muscari and representatives of other bulbous crops will begin to bloom. The last among the early bloomers will be terry tulips in the park “Ostankino”: dark purple varieties “Black Hiro”, yellow-orange “Foxy Foxtrot” (tulips of this variety can be seen in front of the central entrance to VDNKh), white “Mount Tacoma” and “Takoma”.pink pink star varieties.

To find out when certain plants will bloom, it will help to know VDNKh blossom mapwhich is available on the official website of the exhibition.
