Scientists from the Krasnoyarsk Agrarian State University, with the support of RN-Vankor, implemented a grant project to study fish in the Yenisei Bay of the Kara Sea.

As part of the research, the species diversity of fish, the dynamics of their numbers, habitats and factors influencing them were studied. The project is of high importance for Taimyr – in fact, until now, ichthyological studies of the Yenisei Bay have not been carried out.

Scientists have found that the Yenisei Bay of the Kara Sea is home to 13 anadromous and semi-anadromous fish, as well as 18 species of marine fish that are found constantly or occasionally. The surveyed reservoirs are inhabited mainly by economically highly valuable fish – representatives of the whitefish family, which include whitefish, peled, vendace, muksun, tugun, broad whitefish and nelma. Other species periodically penetrate into the river mouth from adjacent areas of the Kara Sea (flounder, pink salmon) or from tributaries flowing into the bay (char, grayling, broad whitefish, whitefish, pike, burbot). All types of fish (except cod and slingshot) are fished, including by indigenous peoples of the North. Among them, whitefish and smelt are of greatest commercial importance.

According to ecologists, fish use the Kara Sea for feeding and spawning. The shallow waters here warm up quickly once cleared of ice, and also have a wide range of water salinities, which attracts both saltwater and freshwater fish. Thus, field studies confirmed the high quality of water in the Yenisei Bay and a sufficient number of food organisms in its reservoirs.

Based on the data obtained during the research, scientists have developed specific proposals for the introduction of environmental standards, the possibility of creating special areas for natural feeding and spawning of fish, as well as the development of fish farming in Taimyr.

The results of the first competition for grants in support of scientific research of practical importance for the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets region of the Krasnoyarsk Territory were summed up at the EcoArctic forum, which was organized for the first time in Taimyr by RN-Vankor.

The purpose of the competition is to contribute to the solution of socially significant problems for the territory of ancestral residence of the indigenous peoples of the North, the development of scientific knowledge about the territory, the preservation of its biological diversity, and the support of the traditional way of life of the local population.

Research teams from leading universities in Siberia, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and state nature reserves took part in the RN-Vankora grant program. In total, more than 20 projects were submitted to the RN-Vankor grant competition.
