Neural networks can generate pictures on a given topic in a few seconds, but will AI be able to compete with a professional designer or become a tool for him? Arseny Meshcheryakov, head of Design schools National Research University Higher School of Economics, creator of one of the first design bureaus in Russia, Agey Tomesh.

AI has changed almost every area of our lives, and the design profession is no exception. The School of Design even opened Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, noted the moderator of the meeting, Director of Public Relations at the Higher School of Economics Roman Levkovich.

“Few people understand how it works, but it works well,” admitted Arseny Meshcheryakov. — Another thing is that the project as such is still invented by a person. AI cannot make any decisions on its own. But the results are very good.”

He said that technological changes have been constantly taking place in design for the last 30 years, and now they are happening at an accelerated pace. Artificial intelligence creates enormous opportunities, and a lot of content is being produced.

“We need some completely new approaches both in design and in art in general. Contemporary art will experience much more problems where the AI simply begins to directly compete with the artist. Today, anyone can become an artist with the help of artificial intelligence. True, such an artist works primarily for himself, because the key difference between a designer is that he works for a customer: the work needs to be sold to someone,” the speaker explained and invited the meeting participants to the exhibition of the School of Design at the “ART MOSCOW 2024” fair “

The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory will present its project there, entirely created by AI. Thus, viewers are offered a topic for reflection – how competitive these works are as works of art.

The active use of AI will lead to increased competition, Arseny Meshcheryakov is convinced. With a general reduction in the cost of content, much higher demands will be placed on the work of professional designers. As happened, for example, with photography: the creation of numerous photo banks did not deprive professional photographers of work, but increased the requirements for them.

In the future, every designer, in order to remain in the profession, will have to become an art director: the industry will need not simple performers, but people who make conceptual decisions, know how to find a solution to a customer’s problem and quickly create projects.

At the same time, artificial intelligence can be extremely useful in work. In particular, he knows how to generate ideas efficiently and very quickly – for example, for advertising projects. The choice of idea and further work with it will be carried out by a person.

“People will never be interested in what artificial intelligence comes up with—people are interested in people. It will always be this way, and nothing else is foreseen,” Arseny Meshcheryakov is convinced.
