On April 15, the XVIII international scientific and practical conference “PR and advertising technologies in modern society” opened at the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. This year’s theme “Engineers of Meaning: Visionaries of the Communications Industry and National Security” is dedicated to two significant dates for the university – the 125th anniversary of the founding of SPbPU and the 25th anniversary of professional training in the field of Advertising and Public Relations.

The grand opening of the conference in the White Hall of SPbPU began with congratulations to the university and the Higher School of Media Communications and Public Relations of the Humanitarian Institute, which provides training in this area.

First, the first vice-rector of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Vitaly Sergeev, took the stage. He read out a welcoming address from Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Olga Petrova.

The university can rightfully be proud of its powerful engineering, technical and humanitarian potential, its significant contribution to solving complex problems of industry and the creative economy. Your professionalism in promoting innovative products and technologies makes an important contribution to the development of the competitiveness of domestic industry in the global market. Guest of honor Inna Karpushina, Deputy Head of the Administration of the Governor of St. Petersburg, Head of the Information Department, Head of the Press Service of the Administration of the Governor of St. Petersburg, came to specially congratulate Polytechnic Peter and open the work of the conference. The hosts of the celebration, Adelina Borozdina and Daniil Vasiliev, master’s students of the Higher School of Music and Education, spoke about the history of the opening of the PR department at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, about what significant projects their studies and student life are filled with today. Students shared important achievements and projects, including honorary title “The best department in the field of advertising and related disciplines” organization of the national technology Olympiad in the field of “Scientific Media Communication”, organization of the All-Russian competition-forum of student communication projects “Engineers of meaning” and a project that started literally in April 2024 – the organization of a media school for more than a hundred schoolchildren of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Lugansk People’s Republic, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. A presentation film about the history of PR education at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University supplemented the presenters’ story with visual images of the glorious 25-year journey at the Polytechnic University.

At the end of the ceremonial part, graduates of GSMISO addressed congratulations to the teachers and staff of the school and presented a bouquet of flowers to the director of GSMISO GI, director of the SPbPU Cultural and Educational Complex Marina Arkannikova. Marina Sergeevna thanked everyone for the warm words of congratulations and parting words.

For 125 years, the university has had a huge responsibility and mission to create national brands and the reputation of Russia. On engineers, and on us, engineers of meaning – specialists in the field of social engineering. And if engineers today solve the problems of technological sovereignty, then our profession stands guard over the cultural sovereignty of the country. Next, the conference presented a plenary report by one of the founders of the St. Petersburg PR school, chairman of the Association of Public Relations Teachers, professor, head of the department of “Public Relations in Business” of St. Petersburg State University Dmitry Gavra.

The conference continued panel discussions “Meaning engineers as visionaries and public opinion leaders in ensuring national security”, “Masters and visionaries of the communications industry: a synthesis of creativity and algorithms”, “International integration of the academic community in training personnel for the communications industry.” On April 16, a public talk “Masters and Visionaries of the Communications Industry” was held for students, graduate students and young scientists. It included four panels, each of which corresponded to the master’s programs of the Higher School of Music and Education. Two days of business discussions were filled with cultural events – acquaintance with the art exhibition “Engineers of Meaning at the Peter Polytechnic: 25 out of 125” and the exposition of the Museum of History of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, concerts in the White Hall, excursions to the Hermitage for foreign conference participants.
