April 25 at the Film Studio. Gorky hosted a presentation of the first graduates of the master’s program “Filmmaking” Institute of Cinema, National Research University Higher School of Economics. The speed dating format, proposed by the academic director of the program Polina Ilyina, allowed each student to speak in front of significant film figures to talk about their screenplay ideas that will form the basis for future projects.

Before the students’ presentation, Alexander Akopov, director of the HSE Film Institute, shared with the guests how the idea of creating the institute came about. “The Association of Film and Television Producers (APKiT) and I have been looking for an alternative to the classic VGIK film education for many years. As a result, thanks to the National Research University Higher School of Economics and personally Andrey Bystritsky, dean Faculty of Creative Industries HSE, we implemented this idea together with the faculty,” says Alexander Akopov. He also told how the students studied and what results they achieved.

The Film Institute began with a teacher training program, Akopov noted. “It is still in effect, since the institute is expanding, we attract new specialists every year,” he added.

The Film Institute opened in 2021 on the basis of the Faculty of Creative Industries of the Higher School of Economics as a challenge to create a completely new program for training film producers and actors, explained Maria Sozinova, deputy director of the institute. “The leading producers of our domestic market, the heads of platforms and TV channels then supported this idea,” she emphasized.

Dean of the FCI Andrei Bystritsky is pleased that the faculty and the Higher School of Economics now have a direction related to cinema. “Our first graduation is wonderful, not because it is the first, but because they study here consciously. Most already have experience in filmmaking and producing. I think our graduates and all of us will be able to do what many have failed to do, namely, to join the process of transforming culture in our difficult but interesting times,” says the dean.

Andrei Bystritsky also noted that films need to be made with an audience of 8 billion people in mind, since the only real art is considered to be art for everyone. “An art that boils down to showing off to your friends by deceiving a certain number of supposedly appreciating individuals certainly has the right to exist. But what is done for everyone, what is done sincerely, is real art,” Andrei Bystritsky is sure.

As part of speed dating, graduates presented their own ideas for feature films and series, as well as animated films. Representatives of the film industry assessed each speaker, noting their favorite candidates for further cooperation. This format of communication will allow newcomers to the profession to find potential employers and acquire the necessary communications.

The practice-oriented approach to teaching adopted throughout the university also applies to the Film Institute. The division works closely with the Kinopoisk company, the production center Plus Studio, APKiT, as well as the Film Studio named after. Gorky, where all student filming workshops take place. “Film Studio named after. Gorky is very glad that we had the opportunity to participate in such an educational journey that we become part of the moment when completely new, cool and interesting people are being trained. They will give a new form to our future Russian cinema,” concluded Yulia Davydova, Deputy General Director of the film studio.
