A new professional holiday, Mathematician’s Day, will be celebrated in winter. Chairman of the Government Mikhail Mishustin has ordered that it be fixed in the calendar.
It is proposed to make December 1 – the birthday of the outstanding Russian mathematician Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky – a holiday date.
The signed decree instructs the Ministry of Education to fix the adopted decision with the necessary normative legal act within two months.
Rector of Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichy addressed the Government with an initiative to establish such a holiday. This proposal was first voiced during the All-Russian Congress of Teachers and Teachers of Mathematics, which was held at Moscow State University in November 2023, and was supported by its participants.
