Novosibirsk State University together with the Institute of Asian and African Studies (ISAA) of Moscow State University in September 2024. in the direction of “Oriental and African Studies” opens a new master’s program “Modern Asia and Global Challenges”. In January of this year, the Ministry of Higher Education and Science of the Russian Federation allocated budget places for enrollment in this program. Based on the results of the training, students will receive a diploma from NSU and a certificate of additional professional education from ISAA MSU. Thus, the first master’s program beyond the Urals, dedicated to the study of topical issues of the development of modern Asia, has been created at Novosibirsk State University.

NSU has accumulated rich traditions of academic classical Oriental studies, which go back more than 55 years. Currently, the Department of Oriental Studies of NSU continues to actively interact with specialists from leading foreign universities and organizations. So, now two native-speaking teachers from South Korea, a teacher from Japan, and several specialists from China are involved in working at the department.

In 2022-2023 The government of the Russian Federation, with the help of the orientalist community, developed the concept of a national program for the development of oriental and African studies, and orientalists from Novosibirsk State University also took part in this work. The concept is based on the idea of training specialists in modern history and international relations of Asian countries who have fully studied the classical history, culture, politics and economics of the East. The task was set to implement the concept as quickly as possible.

— We provide basic knowledge on history, traditional culture, philosophy, religion, the basics of economics, and the socio-political structure of Asian countries as part of a bachelor’s degree, while we deeply study oriental languages. Without a comprehensive immersion in the millennia-old culture of the East, it is impossible to analyze the modern problems of Asia. The current geopolitical situation, the attention of the government and ministries of the Russian Federation to the problems of building relations with Asian countries led to the fact that we quickly developed a separate master’s program focused on modern problems,” says Professor Elena Voitishek, scientific director of the program, head of the Department of Oriental Studies and Head of the Department of Oriental and African Studies Humanitarian Institute NSU.

At the end of 2022, employees of the Department of Oriental Studies were developing a master’s program, and in February 2023, NSU received a License for a new direction in the training of master’s students. It was called “Modern Asia and Global Challenges”. A special feature of the program is the involvement of a very powerful team of teachers from Novosibirsk State University and the Institute of Asian and African Studies at Moscow State University. For example, among the teachers is Professor Alexey Maslov, director of ISAA Moscow State University, who, together with his colleagues, put a lot of effort into the development and implementation of this program.

“We have long agreed on such cooperation and have finally developed a program that is aimed at comprehensive development of theoretical concepts and practical skills. It is important to note that our teachers (both from NSU and MSU) are highly qualified professionals, teachers, scientists, active translators, consultants; they have more than once had to work and live in the countries of East, Southeast, South and Central Asia. As a rule, they continue to conduct many different projects with leading Asian universities and master modern teaching methods and technologies. Therefore, our students are extremely lucky that they have the opportunity, through such teachers, to feel the pulse of life in modern Asia,” notes Elena Voitishek.

The program involves the organization of semester-long internships abroad in the countries of the region being studied, as well as the possibility of implementing individual educational trajectories. The main language of the program is Russian, but if necessary, it is possible to conduct part of the disciplines and seminars in English.

The program includes a set of disciplines on modern issues and development of the countries of the East, primarily the countries of East and Southeast Asia – these are China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Thailand, Vietnam, as well as the countries of Central and South Asia, India, the Middle East. Disciplines include modernization of Asia and regional cooperation, political culture, ideological trends in Asian countries, cultural anthropology of Asia, Asian society in the context of transformation of the 20th-21st centuries, migration processes, culture of Asian diasporas in the world, state and religion in modern Asia, transformation of national traditions and modern transcultural relations in Asia, conflicts and interaction of Asian countries.

The program is intended for undergraduate graduates of Russian and foreign universities in oriental and regional studies specialties, preferably with knowledge of English and one of the oriental languages. For example, students from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and non-CIS countries can study for a master’s degree. The program may also be of interest to bachelor’s graduates from East Asian countries who want to study contemporary problems not only of their country, but of the region as a whole. Graduates of the program will be in demand in scientific and educational activities, in social life, in the field of education, business structures, government bodies and think tanks.

The entrance test program includes two blocks of 15 questions each – a block on the history of Asia in modern and contemporary times and a block on culture, language and literature, where students must demonstrate their erudition, understanding of ongoing processes and the ability to think independently. When summing up the results of entrance examinations, the individual achievements of students will also be taken into account.
